The Light of the World

Deciding to go with God and with Jesus is an option that is ours and ours alone. This choice is poignantly illustrated in William Holman Hunt’s (1827-1910) famous painting entitled “The Light of the World”.  Featured in this painting is Jesus, holding a lantern, standing before a door, knocking patiently while awaiting admittance.

An overgrown ivy covers the door, as if it had not been opened for sometime. Upon closer examinatin, you notice that the door has no knobs or latch on the outside; it can only be opened from within. Reciving no answer, the patient figure of Jeus at the door continues to knock and wait. A sympathetic eye notice noltice the yearning on Jesus’ face. Hunt leaves the outcome to our imagination.
