Twenty-Third Sunday In Ordinary Time
TODAY’S Sacred Scripture readings offer us simple and direct words of encouragement. The prophet Isaiah (First Reading) tells us, “Be strong; fear not!” In the Gospel, the Lord Jesus tells us “Be opened!” In addition, St. James (Psalm) tells us to listen.
When Jesus healed the deaf man, He used gestures that the Church now uses to prepare candidates for baptism. Living true to our baptismal vows requires us to always keep our eyes open and our ears attuned to the needs of others, especially those whom our society has marginalized – the lonely, elderly, jobless and the discouraged, the homeless, the hungry, the immigrant, and those outcast and unloved through the scourge of AIDS, alcohol, or drugs.
